Green Screen Camera Understanding

Green Screen Camera Understanding

Intro:

Today we talk about this massive green thing everybody welcome to another episode of filmmakers my name is Justin Fernando and today we're going to give you a better understanding of green screens you've probably seen in a bunch of Hollywood movies or big superhero movies behind the scenes footage stuff like that you've probably seen that actors on a big set with these big green sheets behind them and you're like why is there a green sheet behind them what is a green screen why is it sometimes blue what does it do what is the point of it and actually green screens are really really incredible and you could even start using them today.

Understaning Green Screen:

So let's learn about green screen so obviously first question what is a green screen now basically a green screen allows you to take a certain color out of your image like the color green now what I mean by that what I mean by that is if you have a solid color behind your actor a green screen for example it's a solid color green you put your actor in front of it a green screen behind them well in the editing process we can go and we can tell the computer to take out everything green in our image and what does that do that allows us to take our actor and make a transparent background so we take our actor and say I want everything green in this shot taken out boom and now we can place our actor anywhere we want because it's a transparent background behind him so yes he's just in front of a green screen but we can take the background away and replace it with anything we want like a forest or the ocean or whatever you want you can take the background out of your image.

Green Screen Usage in Hollywood:

So in many Hollywood movies superhero movies things like that if you can't actually have that person on this set because it's actually huge or maybe it doesn't exist because it was of some ancient times you put them in front of a green screen and then in the editing you can take out the background and replace it with whatever you want so it doesn't have to just be one person on a green screen you can actually have them with a building or maybe they're on a boat or something like that with just a green screen behind them that way the boat is really real and they're interacting with the boat but everything behind them you can change to the ocean or whatever you want to do.

So we take some really famous hollywood shots some really cool shots with these crazy set extensions and the background behind them is amazing and then we look at the before and there's a lot of green screen involved because that place doesn't really exist but they have to make sure that that actor is still there so they put a transparent background behind them so now the actor can be placed anywhere they want to so basically now we can take our actor place him in front of the green screen take the background away and then place him anywhere we want to.

Why We Use Green:

Second question you might have why do we use green I mean you ever thought why is there a green screen and blue screen why is there not a pink screen or a red screen why is it always green in blue and the reason we do that is because whenever we're telling the computer to get rid of a certain color in the shot like the green for instance we don't want that color to be at all in our skin tone but to say we had like a pink background or a red background behind us and we told the computer get rid of all color like this well yes it would get rid of that entire sheet but it might start getting a little bit of spots on our skin or our face or maybe on our clothes because pink actually resembles skin tone a lot or maybe red or maybe orange you can find those colors a little bit in skin tones and it can mess it up of course with green there is no green in your face unless you are definitely ill so that's why they choose green in blue because those two colors are the farthest thing away from our skin tone and the reason we have green and blue is because typically you want to use a green screen.

Where We Use Blue Screen ?:

But say something's in your shot that's actually green maybe you're wearing a green shirt maybe there's a green plant or something like that well we can't really use green because it will start bleeding into that shirt so we use a blue screen which is still really far away from our skintone but now we can tell it to get rid of the blue and it will keep that green in the shot so again we take our green screen we go outside we go anywhere we want to and we want to take a person out of a shot and place them somewhere we just put them in front of a green screen and we can tell the computer take the green out boom there he is transparent which we can place anywhere.

We want to so what does this mean for us exactly well it means that we can take our actor or an object or whatever it is and place them in a situation where they were actually never there or maybe they can never be there because it doesn't exist anymore we can place them on a boat or on a bridge or an explosion behind them or something like that which they were actually never there but we can do that now with green screen or maybe want to place an object into the scene like we didn't clocked whenever John throws the Stone.

I just filmed the grenade spinning on a green screen took the green out then I was able to add that grenade into the shot to make it look realistic so we can add objects into our scene we can take people and put them anywhere we want to we can place them anywhere we want to all because we have a green background behind us so if you look at almost every single Hollywood movie they use green screen in some way or another because it is that useful and it is that awesome.

Where We Get Cheap Green Screen:

The green screen isn't just for a Hollywood budget you can get a green screen pop out like this one for 50 bucks on Amazon it's a green screen and a blue screen I love it you can also get a backdrop which works great or maybe you can go to Walmart and get a green sheet see if that works but either way a green screen can be used at any budget and really help you guys out and be able to create some amazing effects that you never thought you could do before it's not you understand green screening a little bit better and kind of understand why it's used and why people use so much.

In our other episodes we talked about where you would get a green screen what kind of green screens there are how you would light a green screen how we have used green screen before so go check out those episodes for more information about green screens hope this videos really helped you guys out understanding green screens a little bit better as we continue to talk about them now you guys have a better understanding of why they are useful and why so many people use them.
